Offshore Structures Britain

Based on the banks of the River Tees the Offshore Structures Britain facility at at Haverton Hill provides steel manufacturing, blasting and painting facilities for the serial production of large tubular offshore wind foundations, notably the transition pieces or TP’s, which link the mono pile foundations of offshore wind turbines with the towers.

They have recently signed the contract to manufacture 56 Transition Pieces for the Hornsea Project One offshore wind farm off the Yorkshire coast which when completed will be the biggest wind farm in the world. Offshore Structures Britain was established in 2014 as a joint venture between German steel fabricator EEW Special Pipe Construction GmbH and the Danish steel construction company Bladt Industries A/S and was formally opened in 2015.

After seeing a lovely picture of the site taken by a friend of mine, Dave Cocks I asked him about it and what they did as the size of these TP’s looked quite impressive and this in turn led me to getting in touch and arranging with OSB to go along for Getty Images to shoot some pictures of their facility. The idea being that these pictures might then support any future stories or features about things such as renewable energy, offshore industries, UK and north east manufacturing, engineering and so on.

OSB kindly agreed and so I went along this morning and shot some pictures as I was shown around the site to see the process involved in producing these complex yet impressive structures…

With thanks to Offshore Structures Britain for the access and to Dave Cocks for planting the idea.

The Fleet

The inshore fishing fleet at Redcar originated in the early 14th Century with crab, lobster and fishing bringing in much needed income to local fishermen. However as the fishing industry has steadily declined over recent years so to the fleet has reduced in size so that today only a small number of boats put to sea from the town.

What remains of the fishing fleet at Redcar can be found parked either on the seafront promenade or at an area known as ‘Fisherman’s Square’ located a little distance into the town. From both sites the boats that put out to fish or check the pots are towed to the waters edge on trailers pulled by tractors.

Many of the boats that no longer go out are left and are in a state of disrepair but those that remain seaworthy continue to eke out a living despite the issues that are affecting the whole fishing industry such as fishing quotas, running costs and over-fishing and as long as they can do this they help to keep alive the fishing heritage on this part of the north east coast. At least for now.

Jeremy Corbyn visits Middlesbrough College.

Leader of the Labour Party Jeremy Corbyn visited the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) further education college in Middlesbrough earlier today. The visit to Middlesbrough College came as Mr Corbyn visited the region to see how further education colleges in the area are dealing with the aftermath of the closure of the SSI UK Steel plant in Redcar last year by training students and apprentices for future jobs in the petro-chemical, engineering and off shore sectors.

Here’s a few from the visit…

Light support

The Last Post is played looking out over the industrial heartland of Teesside by South Bank brass band member Dave Mackin during a torch-lit procession on Eston Nab…

Hundreds attend a torch-lit procession to the top of the Eston Hills that overlook Teesside on October 24, 2015 in Eston, England. The rally was organised by the group, 'The Friends of Eston Hills' a local community group who wanted to create an opportunity for people to come together to show their support for the steelworkers of Teesside. Over two thousand workers at the SSI UK steel site at Redcar lost their jobs recently following the closure of the blast furnace and coke ovens bringing to end an over 170-years of steelmaking on Teesside.

Hundreds of men, woman and children, many of whom steelworkers and their families and people from the local community climbed high up to the Nab which stands overlooking Teesside on Saturday evening to show their support for the steelworkers of Teesside.

The torch-lit gathering was organised by the community group ‘The Friends of Eston Nab‘ and included a brief statement read out by organiser Craig Hornby who last year along with the group, helped to secure ownership of part of the nab to preserve it for the people of Teesside to enjoy.

Joining those who attended were Labour MP’s Anna Turley and Tom Blenkinsop who through recent weeks have fought to try and keep the steelworks and coke ovens open.

SSI UK steel announced recently that steel production at the site was to be stopped with the loss of over two thousand jobs at the site with many more losses expected in the various supply industries. The closure brings an end to 170-years of steel production on Teesside.

Northern Steel

Hundreds of steelworkers, their families and supporters attended a torch-light vigil and rally this evening in Redcar to show support for the steel workers and contractors from SSI Steel after an announcement was made last week that production at the Teesside site was to be paused.

The company, which employs around 2,000 people said they have taken the decision due to ongoing issues with the supply of raw materials and services.

The event was organised by Labour MP Anna Turley and members of the local community in order to raise awareness of the plight of the workers and to remind the government of their continuing struggle to save the steel works.
