Grassroots – Day of choices

So the day finally arrived. Thursday 7th May 2015. Polling day.

All that remained was for the people to play their part. To make their way to the nearest polling station, mark their choice, stick it in the box and change the world. Or maybe not.

On assignment for Getty Images I covered a number of the polling stations around my area to get some generic ‘pictures of polling stations’ which all help to fill the media appetite on the lead up to the results coming in. Then later that evening I attended the count in Sunderland. For the past five elections Sunderland has been the first in the country to count the votes and declare its winners. So covering this was of interest. Late last night they were successful once again and returned three constituency results all before midnight. An incredible achievement when you consider all that must be done at a count to ensure accuracy.

But their well rehearsed and practiced machine worked well and the results showed Labour winning in all three of the constituencies. First across the post was Bridget Phillipson representing Houghton and Sunderland South. Behind her was Julie Elliot representing Sunderland Central and Sharon Hodgson of Washington and Sunderland West.

There were somewhere in the region of 100 media representatives accredited to attend the count. Photographers, Radio, TV – Even Eamonn Holmes and Fiona Bruce turned up so now you know it must have been an important event! To keep the floor of the count as clear as possible photographs from ground level were shot on a pool basis by Paul Kingston from North News and Pictures with everyone else confined to the balcony area. Whilst a little frustrating to not get the access I might want this is the way of it at times and it’s fair enough so I just had to shoot what I could from the position I was allowed in and see where it went from there.

Once Sunderland had come to an end I then headed down to photograph the count at Redcar and as the hours dragged by into the early morning the count finally finished and the Labour candidate Anna Turley was announced as the winner for the constituency.

So below are a few of my pictures from the day, and the evening, and the night and the errr morning! Twas a long day indeed!

Election Train

Former Prime Minister and MP for Sedgefield Tony Blair and his wife Cherie visited his old constituency today and gave a speech to Labour party members before visiting the construction site for the new Hitachi Trains Europe factory in Sedgefield. The visit came as part of Labour’s campaign build up ahead of the General Election on May 7 which is predicted to be Britain’s closest national election.

The Year in Focus – 2014

So once again we’re heading towards that end of year time when many photographers roll out their ‘Year in Pictures‘ features showing some of their work from over the year. So it seems fitting that I post up some pictures from the range of work that I’ve shot this year. Some of it was shot during the occasional shift for The Northern Echo or in my capacity as a Stringer for Getty Images with other pictures going out as a Contributor to London News Pictures.

Some of these are from various news events and stories that you might be aware of and have seen – either locally or nationally – and others come from various features that I’ve shot during the year. Some come from personal projects or stories I have been working on for a period of time and are either finished or still ongoing whilst others are simply pictures that I shot because I just thought they looked nice!

Some were happy events whilst others not so much. Some might make you angry and others might may make you laugh but hopefully they reflect a varied and interesting year and hopefully next year will be just as interesting to photograph but in the meantime grab a brew (better still wine!) take a look below and check out some of the work from this last year and please feel free to leave a comment at the bottom if you so wish…

All the best for Christmas and the New Year and thanks for following my work throughout the year.

Pickering wartime and 1940’s weekend

Once again Pickering wartime and 1940’s weekend came to the Yorkshire town this weekend with re-enactors, enthusiasts and fans of all things 40’s getting involved and having a great time. 2012 – My year in pictures

As 2012 draws to a close I thought I would share a round up of some of the pictures that I’ve shot during the last year.

The pictures come from various news events including some that made the national or regional newspapers  – some serious and others not so serious.

Pictures from amazing days of incredible surf, to portraits and Jubilee celebrations, from the unusual and the humerous to the tragic and sad, from pictures of personal loss to Goths and steelworkers and from naked royalty made of wool to Damon Albarn and Betty Boo!

It’s been a busy and eventful year for sure with hopefully more to come next year…

There’s quite a few here, so sit back, grab a brew and enjoy the pictures.

All the best for 2013,

Ian
