Hands up if you like surfing…?

So I was out today for a couple of hours shooting at a local spot close to me that many who surf the east coast will know about and one which on the right swell, always delivers…today’s lucky winners who scored when I was there were father and son chargers Gary and Evan Rogers and Terry (trout) Bennions.

For the first time in 2 years since the plant was mothballed by former owners Corus the rollers turned once again in the Steel plant at Redcar today. As the first slab of steel produced by the new owners – SSI – Sahaviriya Steel Industries – came off the production line after the furnace was re-lit at the weekend the long journey since the closure finally reached a happy conclusion for all those involved. This single slab of steel, the first of many, grinding slowly over the rollers as it cooled represents the life blood of many steel workers and their families from this area who rely on the steel industry to make a living.

Production at the plant will now continue with the majority of steel going to export back to Thailand, the home base of SSI, where it will be used in the automotive and white goods industries.
