New Year’s Day Hunt

Horses, riders and hounds from the Cleveland Hunt prepare to ride out on the traditional New Year’s Day hunt this morning. Prior to 1827 this pack was known as the ‘Roxby and Cleveland’ and their hunt country covers an area of around 25 miles by 15 miles and varies from vale to high moorland. Established in 1722 it is one of the oldest in the country.

Saltburn Hill Climb

Hundreds of spectators came to watch the annual historic hill climb on September 13, 2015 in Saltburn, England. The event is organised by Middlesbrough and District Motor Club and brings together the owners of numerous classic cars and motorcycles dating from the early 1900’s up to 1975 who take part in a non-competitive motor gathering and hill climb to test their machines on a steep hill on the outskirts of the town.

COMING SOON…My new book!

I’m delighted to announce that my new book – ‘Coast People – Life on the north east coast’ has gone to print and will be available soon.

Coast People‘ is a photo-book that tells the story of a stretch of British coastline from the area known as South Gare at the mouth of the river Tees, south, to Flamborough Head in North Yorkshire in a set of 190 black and white images and brings to a conclusion a project that I began back in 2009.

Over the following years I have tried to put together a collection of personal images of the people who live and work on this characteristically industrial, but deeply cultured, stretch of coastline and of those who simply visit the coast for their own recreation.

Covering more than 85 miles of coastline and over 16 coastal towns the photos explore the relationships between the commercial and industrial and the day to day activities that form the unique heritage of England’s North East coast.

Throughout this project I have discovered some of the steadfast seafaring traditions that intertwine with the modern ways residents and visitors harness the North Sea for profit, for their livelihoods and for recreation. I’ve also been able to explore parts of the coast that I might otherwise not have known about and I’ve met some great people along the way and ultimately gained a wider understanding of this important part of our culture and heritage.

Shooting in my own documentary style and showing the light hearted humour that characterises the north east I hope this book illustrates that the coast and its heritage are a spectacular asset that must be protected for years to come.

The Yorkshire Post and the Gazette both ran a piece about the book which can be seen on their websites here and here or below in the cuttings and some of the pictures from the book can be seen after that.

I will post further information on availability as it gets nearer the release date.

The softback photo-book (ISBN 978-1-78091-507-4) is 156mm x 234mm with a single picture on each page and is retailing at £14.99 (P&P if required is not included).

It will be available in print from various bookshops across the region and can be ordered online here on….

Grassroots – Lemon Top

The Labour Party Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls joined the party candidate for Redcar, Anna Turley yesterday on the seafront for a bit of a photo-call and to meet some of the Labour Party supporters. As is also traditional for those visiting Redcar he headed to Pacitto’s to grab a ‘Lemon-Top’ ice cream!

After the stop in Redcar he then headed to Conyers School in Yarm to meet up with the Stockton South candidate Louise Baldock. Here they met with 6th form students who were involved in a political debate based roughly on the ‘Question Time’ theme and were invited to join in.

The aim of the visit was to show support for the Labour campaign in key battleground seats ahead of what is predicted to be the closest fought General Election which takes place on May 7.

Grassroots – Stockton

The Deputy Leader of the Labour Party and Shadow Deputy Prime Minister, Harriet Harman arrived in Stockton-on-Tees today to join the Labour Parliamentary candidate for Stockton South, Louise Baldock as they went for a wander around the High Street to try and gain support from shoppers.

The visit came as part of Labour’s campaign ahead of the General Election on May 7 which is predicted to be Britain’s closest national election. After the walkabout they jumped aboard the ‘Pink Bus’ and headed to Grangefield Youth and Community Centre to meet women voters to chat about the issues that they were concerned about ahead of the election.

On assignment for Getty Images I spent the day photographing the visit…

Grassroots – Redcar (II)

As the days between now and the General Election in May gradually slip away the pre-election machines are starting to increase their activities in the marginal areas where a guaranteed victory in the polls might not be as forthcoming as in some other areas. Redcar on Teesside is one of these seats and after a couple of recent visits to the area by Labour MP’s it was time for the party leader Ed Miliband to come to town.

During the visit to Redcar and Cleveland College he addressed members of the public in a People’s Question Time event where following a short introductory speech by the Labour Party candidate for Redcar and Cleveland Anna Turley, he took part in a question and answer session before sitting and chatting with a few of the attending visitors.

I was on assignment for Getty Images covering the event and below are a selection of some of the pictures from the visit edited into black and white. Colour versions are available on the Getty Images website… HERE
