The Creative Spirit of John Curry

On assignment for Getty Images recently I spent the day photographing professional figure skaters Mark Hanretty, John Kerr, Nina Ulanova, Vanessa Bauer, Yebin Mok, Oscar Peter and Mauro Bruni as they took to the ice during final rehearsals for the world premiere ice skating performance of “The Creative Spirit of John Curry”.

Held at the Billingham Forum Ice Arena the show honoured British skating legend John Curry and formed the centre piece of the 55th Billingham International Folklore Festival of World Dance.

In the 1970s and 1980s until his death in 1994 John Curry was one of the most influential ice skaters of the time noted for combining ballet with modern dance during his routines. In 1976 he won gold medals at the Olympics, The World Championships and The European Championships.

Following the premiere the performance will move to Sheffield.
