The Farmers’ Market or Mercado dos Lavradores in Funchal, Madeira is a hive of activity, noise, color and high-energy where you can buy many of Madeira’s specialties from fresh vegetables to exotic flowers and local crafts.
On the upper floor you can buy tropical fruits, vegetables and spices. On the lower floor…well on the lower floor there are fish. Lots of fish.
From huge Tuna to metre-long Black Scabbard fish the fish are brought straight from the boats returning into Funchal harbour where they are unloaded, weighed and prepared for sale in the market.
During a visit to Madeira a couple of years back I went down early in the morning to the market to watch the fish being prepared…
