Roman soldiers from the Italian re-enactment group Legio 1 Italica took part in a weekend of authentic events organised by English Heritage this weekend that were based around Roman military history on Hadrian’s Wall at Birdoswald Roman Fort. The 130-strong group aimed to bring alive the typical life of Roman soldiers based in this area at around AD 124. They recreated the activities such as combat skills, battle tactics, general camp life as well as demonstrating traditional cooking skills and equipment.
The event also saw the Roman soldiers clash with Barbarian warriors as they skirmished on the battlefields.
I spent a couple of days shooting pictures of the re-enactors as they brought history to life….
