The leader of the UK Independence Party Nigel Farage visited Yarm and Gateshead recently as part of a north-east tour ahead of next month’s European elections.
During the visit to Yarm he spoke briefly to a couple of local shopkeepers as he bought some bacon and Cumberland sausages from a butcher and some red roses as button holes from a florist to mark St George’s Day. He also spoke briefly to a few members of the public before answering questions from the media.
Later that evening and just before he arrived to speak at a public meeting at the Sage building in Gateshead there was a small demonstration outside which saw a small number of EDL supporters and anti-UKIP protesters exchange opinions but which ultimately passed off without incident.
Mr Farage then addressed around 1500 people who had attended the public meeting.
