A lively outdoor service was conducted by the Archbishop of York and the Bishop of Whitby yesterday in the ruins of the ancient Abbey that overlooks the Yorkshire seaside town.
Nearly two thousand invited guests joined the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, and the Bishop of Whitby, the Rt Revd Dr Martin Warner, at the Abbey to celebrate the birthday of the Christian Church. This was the first time that an Archbishop and a Bishop have jointly hosted a service at the Abbey since its destruction in the Reformation.
