Thousands of Summer Solstice revellers gathered at the ancient stone circle of Stonehenge in Wiltshire last night and this morning to watch the dawn break on the longest day of the year.
The solstice attracts a very eclectic mix – Druids, hippies, sun worshippers and those who are curious to experience the ancient festival all make the journey to the stones at the one time of the year when full access is granted.
Heavy clouds and rain meant that the sun was not visible as it rose on the longest day of the year – June 21 – but the rain did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of the gathered crowds, many of whom had spent the night sitting around the stones and enjoying the opportunity of being close to one of the oldest recorded structures ever built by man.
